Bruno Bischofberger
Through the many years I spent out and about in the art world, I've had the
opportunity to photograph quite a few art dealers. In April of 1987 I
traveled to Germany to assist my boss Julian Schnabel with his first traveling
retrospective. One of the venues on the tour was the Kunsthalle in
Dusseldorf, Germany and I got a chance to get out of the studio and travel to
the Fatherland.
I met Julian's Swiss art dealer Bruno Bischofberger many times but only took
a few photos of him. The photograph below was taken in artist Imi
Knoebel's back yard during the days spent installing the Schnabel show.
Many years later Julian became a filmmaker. The actor Dennis Hopper
portrayed Bischofberger in Schnabel's second film, Basquiat and featured
David Bowie in the role of Andy Warhol.

hulking sculpture Helen of Troy outside the Kunsthalle. |
Evening descends on Helen of Troy.
Notice the white square Julian painted on her side. This was done
spontaneously, after the sculpture was set in place. |
